Chelsea confirm Hiddink

Dutchman set to coach Chelsea until season’s end while still helming Russia
The Guardian
LONDON — Chelsea have appointed Russia manager Guus Hiddink as their temporary coach until the end of the season, the Premier League club announced here yesterday.
.“Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm Guus Hiddink will become temporary coach until the end of the season,” a club statement said.
.“He is due to meet the players later this week.
.“The club would like to take this opportunity to thank the Russian Football Union for their understanding and cooperation.”
.Hiddink, who will remain in charge of the Russian national side, takes over from Luiz Felipe Scolari after the Brazilian was sacked as Chelsea’s manager on Monday.
.The Dutchman is now set to attend Chelsea’s FA Cup tie against Watford on Saturday with a watching brief. Scolari’s assistant manager Ray Wilkins, a former Chelsea captain, now seems set to pick the side for the Cup tie against Watford.
.Hiddink’s first game in charge will be the Blues’ Premiership match at Aston Villa — the side that have leapfrogged the Blues into third place in the table — on Feb 21.
.The 62-year-old, who knows Chelsea’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovichwell from his time with Russia, couldyet become a permanent fixture at the London club.
.However, he has repeatedly stressed he remains committed to taking Russia to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.
.“I will not quit my work with Russia’s national side,” Hiddink, who in 2002 stunned the football world by steering unfancied co-hosts South Korea to the semi-finals of the World Cup, told the Itar-Tass agency on Tuesday.
.According to a report in British newspaper The Sun yesterday, Hiddink could earn up to £2.5 million ($5.43 million) in his four months as Chelsea’s temporary manager.
.His basic salary at Chelsea, on top of what he draws as coach of Russia’s national side, is said to be £1.5 million and a £500,000 bonus for winning the league.
.The same bonus would apply for performances in the FA Cup and Premier League.
.A dressing room divided
.Scolari, who guided Brazil to World Cup glory in 2002, was sacked after the Blues had slipped down the table to fourth place in the Premier League and seven points behind leaders Manchester United.
.On Tuesday night (yesterday morning, Singapore time), club captain John Terry hinted at what awaits Hiddink at Stamford Bridge: A dressing room divided, which wrecked the Scolari’s brief tenure in west London.
.Speaking ahead of England’s friendly in Spain last night (this morning, Singapore time), Terry was reluctant to talk about the upheaval gripping his club but intimated what Hiddink will effectively inherit.
.“I’m very shocked by what’s happened,” he said. “Scolari had my support. Two or three other players will say exactly the same thing, I’m sure. Unfortunately we weren’t playing well and it falls on his head.
.“At the end of the day it’s about results. That’s unfortunate for Mr Scolari, but the overall picture needs to be looked at. The powers at the club need to look at that.”

Spain rain on Beckham’s parade

Capello insists Englandwill learn from tough lossin Seville, as Beckham matches Moore’s record
International friendly
Spain 2 England 0
SEVILLE (Spain) — Fabio Capello gleaned positives in defeat despite seeing England outclassed by Spain on Wednesday night (yesterday morning, Singapore time), and said his players will be better when they take on Ukraine in their next World Cup qualifier in April.
.The loss at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium was the team’s first in nine matches under the Italian and, while the European champions always seemed capable of upping the tempo, there was encouragement to be had in the visitors’ possession and flashes of adventure, particularly down the flanks.
.“I think this game was very important for us,” insisted Capello. “We played against one of the best teams in the world and we know the difficulties we came up against during the game. I’m not happy because we lost, but I understand a lot for the future. We can’t play the same style (as Spain), but we have to play with our own style with the players that we have at this time.
.“But I repeat: Spain played well because it’s the same team that won the Euro. For me, it was an important test for a lot of players and we learned a lot for the future when we come up against sides like this.”
.Spain have now gone 29 games unbeaten, a sequence dating back to October 2006, with their calm authority setting them apart here.
.MLS set Beckham deal deadline
.David Beckham did at least have the opportunity to earn his 108th cap, equalling Bobby Moore’s outfield record, as a second-half substitute though his evening was marred by a booking for dissent in the closing stages as frustration got the better of him.
.“I’m very honoured to be up there with Bobby Moore,” said Beckham.
.“It’s something I always dreamed about as a kid, playing for England. Now to be up there with Bobby Moore, Billy Wright, Bobby Charlton, is really something. There was a time back in 2005 and 2006 when I missed a few games and I didn’t think I would make it ... Of course I want to break the record now. I’ll take each game as it comes, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
.To do that, he may need to force a move from Los Angeles Galaxy to AC Milan, where he is currently on loan.
.“I’m playing for Milan and having a great time there,” he said.
.“Now I’m just hoping to negotiate with MLS to join Milan. But I’m enjoying my football and I hope it continues.”
.Added Capello: “I’m happy for David‚ it’s an important record‚ but I think he would be disappointed to have equalled the record and lost the game. But Spain have one of the best midfields in the world. They can punish your every mistake, so this was a good lesson to learn.”
.MLS commissioner Don Garber, meanwhile, has now given Milan until today to push through a transfer deal for Beckham. The league owns Beckham’s contract, which is reportedly worth £25 million ($53.6 million) a year.
.“By Friday, he is either coming back or he is transferred,” he said. “If it is not resolved by Friday, I will not approve the transfer. This has been going on too long. There is no reason for it to drag on.” source The Guardian

Blues ready to go Dutch

LONDON — Dutch managers Frank Rijkaard and Guus Hiddink, both linked with Chelsea last year, are reported to be in Chelsea’s shortlist of replacements after Luiz Felipe Scolari was sacked on Monday.
.The Brazilian was let go after losing the confidence of club owner Roman Abramovich, while a number of senior players had begun to question his methods. Assistant manager Ray Wilkins will take charge in the short term.
.Rijkaard’s agent insists the ex-Barcelona coach, has been out of management since last summer, would “consider” the Chelsea manager’s job and would not be scared off by the ruthless reputation of club owner Roman Abramovich.
.“(Frank) is obviously a big fan of the game and a big fan of the Premier League so he can be interested in working in the Premier League,” Rijkaard’s agent, Perry Overeem, told Sky Sports.
.Four managers have come and gone since Abramovich bought Chelsea in mid-2003, but Overeem insisted that would not put Rijkaard off.
.“I don’t think Frank will be scared off by those statistics,” he said. “He will just think of himself as maybe the one candidate who can stay there longer than those earlier coaches.”
.
.Guus focused on Russia
.Hiddink already has a relationship with the Blues’ billionaire owner Abramovich through his role as Russia coach.
.However, the Dutchman remains “focused“ on leading Russia to the 2010 World Cup according to his representative Cees van Nieuwenhuizen.
.“I think because of the personal relationship he has with Mr Abramovich, he will definitely talk to him and listen to him, but I think Mr Abramovich realises he also has not finished his job (with Russia),” the agent told BBC Radio.
.Late last night, Hiddink, who is at a training camp in Turkey with his Russia squad, confirmed he had not heard from Chelsea.
.“Right now I am preparing for dinner with the squad and don’t want to think about where or what people are saying about me or what the bookmakers believe,” he said.
.Former Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini have also been linked with the Stamford Bridge hot seat.
.Avram Grant — who also has a good relationship with Abramovich — has been reported as a contender to return as a caretaker manager after being dismissed by the Blues last May.
.Chelsea’s search for a replacement is thought to be focused on experienced coaches not currently in work, allowing the new man to take charge immediately. That would appear to rule out several potential contenders including West Ham’s Gianfranco Zola, Manchester City manager Mark Hughes, AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti and Hiddink.

Quaresma joins Chelsea on loan

Ricardo Quaresma has joined Chelsea on-loan from Italy's Inter Milan for the rest of the season, the English Premier League side said on Monday.
.The London club added on their official website that the Premier League had ratified the deal, which was announced some two hours after Monday's 1700GMT transfer window deadline had passed.
.Quaresma, 25, a winger who can play on either flank, became the sixth Portuguese player at Stamford Bridge following the pre-season arrivals of Deco and Jose Bosingwa. He has also worked under Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari at international level, including during Euro 2008.
.However he fell out of favour with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho at Inter, whom he joined before the start of this season.
.The former Porto and Barcelona forward was booed by Inter's own fans during the recent 1-1 draw with Torino where he shot over the bar after coming on as a second-half substitute. —source AFP

Liverpool agree to sell Keane to Spurs

Liverpool confirmed Monday they had agreed to sell striker Robbie Keane back to Tottenham Hotspur just months after bringing him to Anfield from their Premier League rivals.
."Liverpool Football Club have reached agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the sale of Robbie Keane," a club spokesman said.
.The news of Keane's return to White Hart Lane was announced barely an hour before the 1700GMT Monday close of the January transfer window and seems set to end an unsuccessful spell at Anfield for the boyhood Liverpool fan.
.The Republic of Ireland international was forced to watch from the stands while Fernando Torres scored twice in Sunday's 2-0 win over Chelsea at Anfield as Liverpool reduced champions Manchester United's lead at the top of the Premier League table to two points.
.The 28-year-old has played just six minutes of Liverpool's last three games and has now failed to feature in four of their last seven matches.
.He has not completed a full 90 minutes for the club since the 3-1 Champions League victory in the Netherlands against PSV Eindhoven on December 12.
.Keane cost 20 million pounds when he moved to Anfield from Tottenham in July but reports on Sunday suggested Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was ready to bring him back to White Hart Lane for a fee in the region of 15 million pounds. — AFP
