As he prepares for Champions League date with United, Jose eyes Fergie’s job

MILAN — Sir Alex Ferguson predicted Jose Mourinho would indulge in mind games before they both meet on Wednesday in a Champions League last-16 showdown at Old Trafford and, as is usually the case, the Manchester United manager was spot on.
.Mourinho, the Inter Milan manager, admitted over the weekend that he expects to be considered when Ferguson finally quits Old Trafford.
.Clearly hinting that he was a match for Fergie, Mourinho — who will lead out his Inter Milan side against United in the Champions League after a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Milan — rates himself as “one of the best managers in the world”.
.His gift for self-promotion hit its peak when he told the British tabloid News of the World: “I have big jobs left in me that is for sure — but I can’t commit to which ones.
.“If you want me to rule out ever being Manchester United manager, I can’t.
.“Special clubs need special managers so in theory it could work, but nobody knows what the future is in football.
.“The England national team wanted me as coach and that is the biggest job in England, so I am sure when Sir Alex retires they will look at the best managers in the world and I certainly fall into that category.”
.Opinion is mixed over Mourinho’s claims that he could become United manager.
.It does look as if the Portuguese is on course to win the Serie A title, after an impressive 2-0 victory at Genoa on Saturday (yesterday morning, Singapore time).
.Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mario Balotelli maintained Inter’s seven-point lead at the top of Serie A, butwhat would have pleased Mourinho most was that the team put on a display fullof power, commitment, organisation anda little swagger, too.
.The only negatives for Mourinho were injuries to centre-backs Marco Materazzi and Nicolas Burdisso, who both left the game during the first half.
.That, and United’s impressive showing in beating Fulham in the FA Cup, will be Mourinho’s two main worries ahead of the Old Trafford visit.
.Nevertheless, the win was the perfect response to Inter’s midweek 3-0 Coppa Italia defeat to Sampdoria.
.“What happened against Sampdoria was due to individual mistakes, which can happen in football,” said Mourinho.
.“Tonight we played with great spirit. After losing Materazzi and Burdisso we had some problems with our formation. Ibrahimovic wanted to come off but other players like Balotelli were fantastic. They weren’t easy opponents.”
.Cristian Chivu and Walter Samuel are already struggling to be fit for the United date, but a defiant Mourinho said: “We have faith for the game in Manchester even if I won’t be able to sleep because we’ll have lots of problems in defence against very strong, attacking opponents.
.This team have always come out with their heads held high despite all the problems.” source Agencies
